Four North Texans who face charges of cybercrime conspiracy have been found in Cancun, Mexico after fleeing from the United States. They had been indicted the previous week by a Dallas federal grand jury and then made the decision to flee the country.

They were part of a nineteen strong group who were charged with conspiracy to commit fraud in a huge cybercrime ring. This had been going on from March 2003 right up to July 2009 according to US attorney Mr. James Jacks. There were allegations made by certain telecom companies that a Mr. Michael Faulkner and companies on his server had not been paying for web hosting services and for voice over internet protocol services. It was also alleged that some of the individuals involved were using fake id in order to obtain some services and goods.

It became possible for these individuals to obtain certain things such as generators, office space or computer racks by setting up fake companies which would conceal their true identity.

Mr. Faulkner fled the United States with his wife in order to try to avoid prosecution. Suggestions are that they were the main leaders in this crime ring. But they did not flee alone and were arrested in Mexico along with Jason and William Watts.

Destroying evidence, obstructing justice, witness intimidation and hiding assets are some of the other charges that Mr. Faulkner will now face as well as the cybercrime charges. He will also face charges of registering a domain name falsely.

The consequences of being convicted of any one of these crimes are huge. The charge of conspiracy carries a maximum penalty of thirty years in prison along with a fine of $1 million. He could find himself facing up to twenty years in prison for the charges of obstruction and fines of up to $250,000. And there could be a further seven years in prison if convicted of registering a domain name falsely with a felony.
